If You Have This Leadership Characteristic, You Will Win...
Inner Strength
Inner strength decides the direction of our life. It’s another one of those hidden traits. I believe strongly that how you feel about yourself on the inside will determine the success of your leadership on the outside.
Outside success is what most of us are shooting for - larger salary, maybe a new house, or a vacation. The fact is, it’s hard to truly enjoy any of that external success without first having success on the inside.
When you feel fit, confident, smart, strong, and full of purpose, what are you likely to accomplish?
When you feel overweight, slow, weak, lazy, and stressed, what are you likely to do?
In Scenario A, you are much more likely to climb mountains, tackle new business opportunities, lead others well, and have the courage to ask that special person out on a date (which is your spouse if you're married - just thought I should make that clear).
In Scenario B, you are more likely to accomplish eating a whole bag of Oreos, drinking a glass of milk, and heading back to the couch for another nap.
Who would you rather be?
I’m shooting for Scenario A, but much of the time I feel like a B. What about you?
When a person's inner self is weak, or their perception of themselves is weak, they often won't step forward when called to do something great - whether that's building a business, serving others, or volunteering. Instead, the tendency is to back away or stay at home.
On the other hand, when a person is strong on the inside, they are willing to go anywhere and do anything that is meaningful and effective.
How Do You Develop Inner Strength?
- Believe in yourself because you are uniquely gifted.
- Spend time with people who believe in you, and limit time with those who constantly pull you down.
- Accomplish something every day by creating small goals and following through on them.
- Find joy in your relationships by choosing to spend time with encouraging, positive people.
- Take action in areas of weakness to build new strength. Sometimes that means doing something practical, like getting up early every day.
- Get out of the house. Spending too much time at home can slowly drain your creativity and your soul.
- Help someone else. One of the fastest ways to feel better about yourself is to make someone else's life a little better.
Inner strength isn't something you're born with - it's something you build. And the stronger you become on the inside, the more courage you'll have to lead, to serve, and to pursue the opportunities God places in front of you. Strong leaders aren't simply talented people; they're people whose inner life is strong enough to sustain everything they're called to do.
